Departing for Trip North – 2014

We will be departing today from Port Superior for our annual trip north. The plan is to head out to the anchorage north of Oak Island and drop the anchor for the night. Then get up early – 0300 – and start out to cross the lake. The first destination will be Thompson Island. There may be some rainy weather setting in and we can hole up there for a couple of days.

We hope to spend some quiet time in anchorages such as Woodbine in the photo. We will be attending the annual Red Rock Folk Festival from 7 – 11 August. Other plans are not specific.

Folk Music Showcase

IMG_3703_01I will be hosting a monthly (Second Wednesday) Folk Music Showcase at the Underground Music Cafe (formerly the Coffee Grounds) in Falcon Heights. Each month, I will invite a musician from the area the join me. We will trade songs for a couple of hours. There will be a loosely defined theme each time and we will try to dig out songs that address the theme.

The first Showcase will be April 9 at 7:00. Laura Moe will be the featured musician. Click here for details.

Critical Aclaim for New CD: Old Voice

Larry Carpenter Old Voice CD Insert front

Larry has released his second CD: Old Voice

His sound is a simple one exuding the quality of elemental grace we haven’t seen since the likes of Tom Rush, Eric Anderson, Phil Ochs and such surfaced back in the late 60s and early 70s.” Dwight Hobbes, Twin Cities Daily Planet, 7 March 2014.

Lots of Meetings

For a more complete summary of my trip, visit the Toddler Food Partners website.

The last several days have been taken up with meetings and a trip to Nagpur for an overnight stay. I haven’t even had a chance to take many photos.

New semi-automated packaging machine in use

We spent the morning of Thursday, 29th, at the production facility during which I shot a series of video clips to document the process for making MNT. The afternoon meeting was for a series of presentations by the Sion team, by people from SNEHA and a presentation showing the study data through September. We are awaiting later data.

On Friday, 30th, we were shown the results of an experiment comparing four different emulsifiers. The oil in the MNT tends to separate out during storage. One of the four emulsifiers was clearly superior in preventing oil separation and hardening of the product. It will be used for production after the study is done.

That evening we flew to Nagpur and were met at the hotel by Dr. Dhonde. She brought us to her home for a wonderful meal which concluded with a chocolate cake with “Happy Birthday Larry” on it!

We met with this group of ladies

The next day was full with meetings of the staff that is preparing for a clinical study once they get approval. The final meeting was a small NGO that is making food mixes and snacks that are very similar to traditional foods and snacks except they have greater nutritional values. We (TFP) will be keeping in touch with this group for possible future partnering.

We got back to IIT about midnight last night – the flight was late. Today we slept late and I have spent much of the afternoon editing my videos so we can show the process at a meeting with a local equipment supplier tomorrow.

Arrived in Mumbai

Long overdue grooming

The trip from Minneapolis to Mumbai was uneventful but long. I watched my annual quota of bad movies on the flights. I figure it was about 27 hours elapsed time from home to the guest house where we are staying. Quick check at immigration and long wait for bags to come around the carrousel. The Guest House at IIT is very nice and includes breakfast with other meals available. We met with two key project people today then Shiv and I took a walk outside the IIT campus. I bought electric adapters with surge protection so I can plug in my battery chargers for various devices including my laptop. Then attended to a long overdue grooming issue.

I will be spending about two weeks in India returning mid December. I will try to post in this blog site while I am there.
